Jeongdo-kwan

정도관 · 正道館

Jeongdo-kwan is one of the nine schools of martial arts that contributed to the foundation of Taekwondo. Opened by 이용우 (Li Yong-wu) in 1954 CE, the school is now a society, which officially supports the style of Taekwondo taught by 국기원 國技院 (Gukgiwon, Kukkiwon).

History

Jeongdo-kwan was founded by Li Yong-wu, who was formerly a student of Cheongdo-kwan.

Etymology

(jeong) means 'precise' or 'exact', (do) means 'way', and (gwan, kwan) refers to a training hall. Therefore, 정도관 正道館 (jeongdogwan) means 'The School of the Right Way'.

The name 'Jeongdo-kwan' follows the traditional naming scheme for martial arts styles. This would therefore mean that the style of martial arts practised at Jeongdo-kwan is called 'Jeongdo-kwan Taekwondo'.

Korean Date

The date today is,

4350 년 8 월 4 일 (4350, Month 8 Day 4) (24 September 2017 CE)

This is the date according to the traditional lunisolar calendar of Korea. (Note that this is not an authoritative calculation; I’m still working on the details.) The years count back to the legendary founding of Korea by 단군 왕검 (Dan-gun Wanggeom).
