Cheonji

천지 · 天地

Sometimes written Cheon-ji, Chonji, Chon-ji, Chunji, Chun-ji.

Interpretation

Cheonji literally means 'the world'. In the orient it's interpreted as the beginning of the world or human society.

In this context, (cheon) refers to the sky or celestial realm. Sometimes cheon is interpreted to mean 'heaven', however this translation introduces ambiguity. The word 'heaven' tends to refer to the very specific ideas from western religions, which is not necessarily the intended meaning. The syllable (ji) means 'earth' or 'ground'. Hence, the entire term means 'the sky and the earth', or 'the world'.

Cheonji represents the beginning, which is why the first form in Changheonyu Taekwondo is named this. There may be other training exercises that students learn before, such as 사주 지르기 (saju jireugi), but they're not considered to be forms. Note that also, Cheonji is one of the few forms in Changheonyu Taekwondo not to be named after a person.

There are two distinct but similar parts to Cheonji, which represent the components of the world: the sky and the earth. The two parts both follow the pattern of block then punch, but are differentiated by use of first the low block, then the middle block.

Korean Date

The date today is,

4350 년 3 월 30 일 (4350, Month 3 Day 30) (25 May 2017 CE)

This is the date according to the traditional lunisolar calendar of Korea. (Note that this is not an authoritative calculation; I’m still working on the details.) The years count back to the legendary founding of Korea by 단군 왕검 (Dan-gun Wanggeom).
