Chungmu

충무 · 忠武

Sometimes written Chung-mu, Choongmoo, Choong-moo.

Interpretation

Chungmu was the name given the to great naval commander 이순신 (Yi Sun-sin) by the royal court following his death. He is famed for his victories against the Japanese army during the 임진 (Imjin) war in the 조선 (Joseon) dynasty. Chungmu is greatly revered for his improvements upon the armoured ship 거북선 (Geobukseon). He died at 노량 대첩 (Noryang Daecheop), the Battle of Noryang, from a single stray bullet.
