Dan-gun

단군 · 檀君

Sometimes written Dangun.

Interpretation

Dan-gun refers to 단군 왕검 (Dan-gun Wanggeom), the legendary figure who founded of the nation of 고조선 (Gojoseon) in 2333 BCE. Gojoseon was located in what is now north-east China and Korea.

The legend was recorded in a book called the 삼국 유사 (samguk yusa), and whilst there are numerous colloquial versions, you can read the translation of the original story here.

Korean Date

The date today is,

4350 년 3 월 30 일 (4350, Month 3 Day 30) (25 May 2017 CE)

This is the date according to the traditional lunisolar calendar of Korea. (Note that this is not an authoritative calculation; I’m still working on the details.) The years count back to the legendary founding of Korea by 단군 왕검 (Dan-gun Wanggeom).
