Hwarang

화랑 · 花郎

Sometimes written Hwa-rang.

Interpretation

The Hwarang were an elite youth group in Korea during the sixth and seventh centuries. They originally emphasised the study of arts and culture, though later the group became militarised and trained in horsemanship, sword fighting and archery. They were notable in their efforts during the unification of Korea.
