Interpretation

The interpretation of the word Juche is not straightforward. In the political context from which it originated, Juche refers to an economic independence and nationalism, and that Korean ideals and interests are the most important. It also refers to an individual’s ability to work independently and therefore successfully; 김일성 (Kim Il-seong) described it as the belief that “man is the master of everything and decides everything”. Within Taekwondo though, it could refer more to the idea that with determination, a student can master the art.

The diagram represents 백두산 (Baekdusan), a mountain on the border between Korea and China that is a national symbol.

Comparison to Other Forms

Choi Hong-hi created this form with the intention that it would replace 코당 (Kodang). However, there are numerous similarities between the two forms.

Downward elbow strikes, downward punches, downward outer-forearm blocks, and twin inward blade-hand strikes appear in both Juche and Kodang. The combination of bending ready stance and then back kick also appears in both forms.
