Heian Sandan is one of the forms mentioned in the textbook Taekwondo (1) written by 최홍희 (Choi Hong-hui). More formally part of Karate, the form was omitted from later editions of the textbook, and is consequently no longer learnt by students of Taekwondo.

None of the newer forms designed by Choi appear to be directly inspired by Heian Sandan, but many of them feature movements from this form. Heian Sandan contains the spear-hand thrust and release move seen in Dosan, the low and mid consecutive forearm block from Hwarang, and the stamping sitting stances from Toigye.

Notes

  • In Taekwondo (1), the word-arrangement is very different to how it is in this article; this is done with the aim of allowing comparison between these historical forms and the ones designed by Choi.
  • In Taekwondo (1), no Korean is given for the individual movements of the form; this has been written in here for completeness.
  • In Taekwondo (1), the positions of the letters in the floor diagram is different; they have been changed here for consistency.

Korean Date

The date today is,

4350 년 3 월 30 일 (4350, Month 3 Day 30) (25 May 2017 CE)

This is the date according to the traditional lunisolar calendar of Korea. (Note that this is not an authoritative calculation; I’m still working on the details.) The years count back to the legendary founding of Korea by 단군 왕검 (Dan-gun Wanggeom).
