Rōhai is one of the forms mentioned in the textbook 태권도 (Taekwondo) (1) written by 최홍희 (Choi Hong-hi). More formally part of Karate, the form was omitted from later editions of the textbook, and is consequently no longer learnt by students of Taekwondo.

Like with many of the Shōrin-ryū and Shōrei-ryū forms, it is clear that combinations from Rohai formed part of the inspiration for the forms designed by Choi Hong-hi. Movements twenty and twenty-one of this form are very similar to the posture movement from 퇴계 (Toigye).

Notes

  1. Most of the forms mentioned in Taekwondo (1) are identical or extremely similar to the forms learnt by students of Karate today - if they differ it is usually only through the inclusion or alteration of one or two moves. However, Rōhai as described in Choi's book seems to be completely different to the forms Rōhai Shodan, Rōhai Nidan, and Rōhai Sandan practised in Shitō-ryū Karate, and is also completely different from Rōhai practised in Wadō-ryū, and to Meikyō. Therefore, there is no visual comparison for this form - there are no videos which show the more complicated moves being performed. This leads to some abiguity in the movements described on this page.

Korean Date

The date today is,

4350 년 3 월 30 일 (4350, Month 3 Day 30) (25 May 2017 CE)

This is the date according to the traditional lunisolar calendar of Korea. (Note that this is not an authoritative calculation; I’m still working on the details.) The years count back to the legendary founding of Korea by 단군 왕검 (Dan-gun Wanggeom).
